What is it?

Passion Fruit is native to South America and is currently cultivated in most tropical and subtropical regions including Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Vietnam. Passion fruits grow on vines and the skin of the fruit can range in color from dark purple to light yellow or orange.  The inside of the fruit is composed of juice and pulp-filled pockets that contain hundreds of small black seeds. Each seed is individually surrounded by deep-orange-like colored sacs that contain the juice.  The juice is extracted from the pulp.  See the video below to learn more about how passion fruit is processed.

Purple Passion Fruit vs. Yellow Passion Fruit

iTi Tropicals is excited to offer juice and juice concentrates made from both purple and yellow passion fruit varietals. Our purple passion fruit originates from Vietnam while our yellow passion fruits originate from Ecuador and Peru. The skin or flesh differs in color but the inside pulp and juice remain a vibrant orange color and purple passion fruits are typically smaller in size than yellow passion fruits.  Vietnamese purple passion fruit is also noticeably sweeter, less acidic, and milder in flavor than its’ Ecuadorian and Peruvian counterparts, which are much bolder in flavor and more acidic.
