Tropical Fruit with Worldwide Popularity

The pineapple, known for its delicious taste, is  a tropical plant native to South America where it has been grown for centuries. In the 17th century, pineapples were introduced to Europe and became an instant symbol of wealth.  Originally from southern Brazil and Paraguay, pineapple has become a global sensation thanks to its delicious taste and aromatic flavor. It can now be found in tropical regions across the globe, such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Trinidad. In America, it is the second most consumed tropical fruit after bananas. Pineapple provides a familiar flavor profile, but also adds a refreshing tropical twist to any product.

Nowadays, pineapples are commercially grown in greenhouses and tropical plantations worldwide. Pineapples grow as small shrubs, with the individual flowers of the unpollinated plant merging to create a multiple fruit. Typically, the plant matures within a year and is propagated from the offset produced at the fruit's top or a side shoot.
