Get to Know Guava!

By: iTi Innovation

Guava is an exotic fruit grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions.  The fruit is typically between 2-4 inches long and is round, oval or pear-shaped.  Before reaching full maturity, the thin skin is green, hard, and very astringent.  Upon ripening, the fruit softens and the skin turns from green to yellowish-green.  The flesh of guava varies in color from white to yellowish, light to dark pink, or even reddish and contains numerous tiny seeds.

Ripened guava has a strong, sweet, musky odor.  Its sweetness and acidity is well balanced.  It has a tropical flavor sometimes described as a mixture of pear, quince, and fig.  Guava blends very well with other fruits we supply at iTi, such as mango and passionfruit.

Its versatility allows it to be highlighted as the main ingredient in any product or as a complement to other fruits and flavors.  It can be used in tropical drinks, smoothies, yogurts, ice creams, jellies, syrups, sauces, cocktails, and marinades.  Guava is also paired with sweet desserts like cheesecake, turnover filling, and dessert sauces.

Enormously popular in Brazil and the Caribbean, it is frequently made into a juice and adds unique taste dimension to sweet treats like Romeo and Juliet, which pairs tasty guava paste with soft creamy cheese for a sweet and salty dessert.

Guava is a rich source of nutrients including dietary fiber, vitamins A and C, folic acid, potassium, and minerals copper and manganese.  Today, the pink guava is receiving approval from nutritionists, food connoisseurs and health enthusiasts, winning them over with its nutritious contents, delightful aroma, and unique taste and texture.
